How to Cover an Office Chair with Fabric

Office chairs can take quite a battering over the years and end up looking tired and tatty. However, if you think about it most of the chair is still usable and in good condition and once recovered could be as good as new. Refurbishing your office chair could save you the expense of a new chair at a fraction of the price. Visit this link for more info.

We are using a typical office chair as an example and below we will show you how to recover the chair with new fabric:

Tools Required

  1. Screwdriver
  2. Fabric staple gun

Step One

Office ChairPick the chair up and turn it over and remove the screws from the seat base with a screwdriver. Once the seat has been removed, lay the seat onto your fabric. If you are using a plain fabric it doesn’t matter, but if the fabric is patterned unsure the fabric pattern is facing the right way.

Step Two

With the staple gun staple the straight sides first. Then when all the sides are stapled pull the fabric on each corner as far as you can and staple them down with a single staple. You will now see you have on each of the corners, two flaps of material. Put a finger in the middle of each flap and flatten it to make a pleat and staple it down. Now trim off an excess fabric.

Step Three

Next step is to cut a piece of muslin to fit the bottom of the chair. Now fold the edges under and staple the muslin to completely cover up the edges of your new fabric. Next, you’ll need to find the screw holes which will now be hidden. When you find them snip a hole with the scissors. One you have done this you can screw the base back to the chair.

Step Four

On some office chairs you can simply pry off the backrest, on others it may be fastened in the middle. Once you have removed the backrest, lay the backrest on your new fabric and trace around it. When done, cut the tracing, giving yourself a good margin of a few inches. Next, you’ll need to make a running stitch with heavy thread around the edges of the fabric.

Step Five

Put the fabric on the backrest; now pull the cord in order to gather up the material. It is best to begin from the bottom and work the way up both sides of the backrest, tucking the material edges in-between the plastic and cushioned parts of the back of the chair. You may find using a small flat edged screwdriver is an ideal implement for this job. When finished, you need to snap the two parts of the chair back into position.

If you take your time and work methodically, you will end up with an office chair which will look as good as new and you’ll save yourself a fortune into the bargain.
